The 2026 Memory Landscape
DDR5 is now mainstream, but DDR4 remains relevant for budget and older-platform upgrades. New builds in 2026 should almost always use DDR5; upgrade decisions depend on your existing motherboard chipset.
1. Capacity: 16GB is okay, 32GB is comfortable
Office work and esports run fine on 16GB. AAA gaming, video editing, virtual machines and heavy browser use benefit from 32GB. Content creation or local AI workloads should start at 64GB.
2. Frequency: DDR5 6000–7200MHz is the sweet spot
AM5 platforms run DDR5 6000MHz most efficiently; higher frequencies bring diminishing returns and require better boards. Intel platforms can run 6800–7200MHz, but stability depends on the motherboard and CPU IMC. Don't chase frequency at the cost of stability.
3. Timings: CL30–CL36 is common
Lower timings mean lower latency at the same frequency. DDR5 6000 CL30 is often better for gaming than DDR5 6400 CL40. Prioritize capacity first, then frequency, then tighter timings.
