Choosing a motherboard means choosing your platform. In 2026 the main consumer platforms are AMD AM5 (B650/X670/X870) and Intel LGA 1851 (B860/Z890). The board dictates which CPU, memory and GPUs you can use, plus your upgrade headroom.

1. Chipset: B-series is enough, Z/X-series adds overclocking and expansion

For non-overclockers, AMD B650 or Intel B860 is enough to run even high-end CPUs. Step up to X670E/X870E or Z890 only if you need CPU overclocking, more PCIe 5.0 lanes, extra USB/SATA or better networking.

2. VRM: look at phases and heatsinks

High-core-count CPUs draw serious current, so the voltage regulation modules (VRMs) must keep up. For 8-core CPUs, aim for at least 8+2 phases with heatsinks; 16-core flagships should have 12+2 phases or better. Don't just count phases—check MOSFET quality and heatsink mass.

3. Expansion: buy what you will use

PCIe 5.0 for GPUs and SSDs is still a high-end feature in 2026; PCIe 4.0 is plenty for most users. Count M.2 slots, USB-C speed, 2.5GbE and Wi-Fi 7 based on your actual needs.
